On October 2nd and 3rd, the Great Frederick Fairgrounds will be transformed into a German village for the eighth annual Frederick’s Oktoberfest. This event is rich in tradition, history and good old-fashioned fun. What’s not to like about that, especially when it includes bratwurst and, you guessed it, Oktoberfest bier, along with German wines, soft drinks and German food. And, if you don your authentic Dirndl or Lederhosen, you’ll get in free. Otherwise the cost is just $5 per adult, and children eleven and under are free.
Oktoberfest provides something for everyone – families or single folks, young or old, male or female. No German celebration would be complete without live music, Polka and Alpine dancers. The contests held throughout the weekend are sure to stir things up. If you’re buff, you can compete in the Uber Strong Man/Woman contest or the Log Sawing Competition. For those who are more comfortable in “routine” situations, there’s always the Chicken Dance or Polka competitions. Or start training your vocal chords now to compete in the German-American Idol Yodeling contest – who knows, you may even be able to parlay that skill to compete on TV! And for the most sedentary, browsing the craft vendors is an activity that is sure to please.
The children will delight in the activities and entertainment just for them, including scare-crow making, a hay bale maze, pumpkin decorating, face painting and a moon bounce. The entertainment line up includes the Actor Anonymous Troupe, a magician, clown, and Karate demonstrations.
The event is handicap accessible and will be held rain or shine. More information, including schedules is available at the web site www.frederickoktoberfest.com.
Frederick has been a “sister city” of Schifferstadt, Germany for more than 25 years, as well as, more recently, Morzheim, Germany. The Rotary Club of Carroll Creek and the Fredericktowne Rotary have partnered with Community Living to celebrate the sister cities’ relationships, which supports the important goal of cultural exchange. In addition, all proceeds from Frederick’s Oktoberfest will benefit Community Living and the community service projects of the two Rotary clubs.
Frederick’s Oktoberfest is open from 11am – 10pm on Saturday, October 2nd and from 11am – 6pm on Sunday, October 3rd.
